The SSNP was established during the French colonization of Lebanon. Its original ideologies and charter were founded by Antoine Sa'adeh and its activities were clandestine. In 1935 the party was exposed and Sa'adeh was jailed, sparking a period of growth for the party which launched a campaign against the Nationalists. In 1949 Sa'adeh declared an armed revolt against the government which quickly failed and he was tried, convicted and executed in July 1949. The party has been characterized by many divisions and internal fighting which adversely affected its strength and ability to participate in the political environment. The SSNP participated in the civil war, joining forces with both the National Movement and the National Front. It became famous for conducting missions against Israeli forces during the occupation in 1982. Today, the party is active in government with several deputies and ministers in the parliament.
