To an Arab musician the words of a song are as important as the music, if not more. To the majority of Arabs the sung words are charged with an extraordinary intoxicating effect. Instrumental music is often described as "silent music" and is generally performed for the elite and belongs to the maqam tradition (the Arabic music scale system). Each maqam has its distinctive melodic phrases, principal notes and a boundary, yet offers the musician tremendous flexibility for innovation and improvisation. The unique element in singing or playing the maqam on an instrument is the silent pause, like the punctuation mark that often appears between melodic phrases. This album features the maqams enriched during the Ummayad Caliphate period in Syria by one of the greatest musicians of the region: Ibn Misjah.
